The 70th Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy: The Triumph of NNS DELTA, A Ship Inspired by the Vision of Commodore Tasiu — Beecroft

Commodore Shehu Mohammed Tasiu’s innovative leadership and dedication have been credited by Captain Daniel Beecroft, Executive Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, for the Naval Base’s recent outstanding accomplishments.

Beecroft delivered the speech at the Officers’ Ceremonial Dinner in Warri, Delta State, as part of celebrations honouring the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
He spoke well of Commodore Tasiu, praising him as a transformative leader who has rejuvenated the Base and improved its operational performance via his commitment to the welfare of troops, development of infrastructure, and involvement with the community.

Commodore Shehu Mohammed Tasiu, Commander of NNS Delta, deserves extra recognition tonight, Beecroft stated.
His account is that the Commander had “written his name in gold” through the organization of what he called the Base’s first formal dinner of its sort and the spearheading of substantial upgrades to infrastructure and human welfare.

Commodore Tasiu oversaw a number of humanitarian and development projects as part of NNS DELTA’s 70th anniversary festivities, which Beecroft said went above and beyond the usual ceremonial events to have a real influence on the host towns.

He revealed that the Base has distributed over 1,200 notebooks, textbooks, teaching aids, and school bags to students at Ogiame Primary School as part of its educational outreach programs.
More than a thousand people in the Ubeji Community were able to take advantage of the command’s medical outreach, which included free consultations, lab work, eye exams, and dental care.

Furthermore, assistance was provided to the wives of dead troops, and sporting events were planned to foster camaraderie, cooperation, and community involvement among adolescents, security agencies, and paramilitary groups.

Beecroft went on to say that the Base has commissioned a number of projects, one of which was an institutional residence for the Executive Officer and a state-of-the-art transit lodging facility, both funded by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited.
He praised the Delta State Government for their unwavering backing of NNS DELTA, mentioning the essential role of the ongoing foreshore wall project in safeguarding the operational infrastructure of the station.

The naval officer went on to thank Dr. Kingsley Emu, the secretary to the government of Delta State, for all of his help and support to the command.
During the anniversary celebrations, Beecroft paid respect to Vice Admiral Dan Preston Omatsola (Rtd), the previous Chief of the Naval Staff, saying that his presence served as an inspiration to the officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy.

He emphasised the continued importance of collaboration for marine security, community development, and national advancement, and he pleaded with stakeholders and partners to continue supporting the Navy.
As part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Nigerian Navy, Commander NNS DELTA Commodore Shehu Mohammed Tasiu, who spoke at the dinner, emphasised a number of community-focused events that the Base had hosted.
He mentioned that the host villages were helped by the Delta State Government’s food distribution, healthcare services, and promises of ongoing support, conveyed by the Special Guest of Honour, the Commissioner for Special Duties.

More than 1,200 notebooks, textbooks, and teaching aids were delivered, and every kid received a school bag, during the Base’s educational outreach at Obiyame Primary School, he said.

Putting money into these kids’ educations is like putting money into Nigeria’s future. Tasiu stated that education is still the most direct route to long-term prosperity.
An executive suite furnished by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited and a one-story self-contained transit accommodation within the Base were among the projects commissioned during the jubilee celebrations, as the Commander revealed further.

In addition, he mentioned that the Ubeji Community was brought into the festivities by the Navy through a medical outreach program. More than a thousand locals were treated to free consultations, laboratory tests, eye exams, and dental care.

Youths, security agencies, and paramilitary groups participated in football, volleyball, and tug-of-war tournaments to promote cooperation, solidarity, and community involvement, as pointed out by Tasiu.
It was clear from the event that anything is possible when people work together, have proper training, and take turns being responsible. In all of our future cooperative actions, whether on land, sea, or air, he emphasised that model.

He thanked Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government of Delta State, Vice Admiral Dan Preston Omatsola (Rtd.), the former Chief of the Naval Staff, and other partners for their assistance in making the anniversary celebration a success.

In his speech, Tasiu restated NNS Delta’s dedication to enhancing links between the military and the civilian population, protecting Nigeria’s waterways, and helping host towns grow.
Several other speakers lauded the Nigerian Navy for its seven decades of service, noting its positive impact on marine safety, community development, and national security.
While urging security agencies to stay dedicated to their constitutional responsibilities, former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Dan Preston Omatsola (Rtd) hailed the Armed Forces as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s unity.

The Nigerian Navy and Armed Forces are the backbone of the country’s solidarity. “The principles that have united this nation must be preserved and our institutions must be fortified,” he emphasised.
The Nigerian Navy has continued its legacy of professionalism and quality, according to retired navy commander Commodore Omatseye Nesiama.

“The Nigerian Navy’s progress has been remarkable. “We are confident in the future of the Service because we see younger officers continuing the tradition of excellence,” he said.
Brigadier General Efe Dafioghor (Rtd) made a similar point, highlighting the need for cooperation among security agencies to tackle modern security threats.

“We must all do our part to ensure security. Maintaining stability and peace, he emphasised, depends on the cooperation between the host communities, security institutions, and the military.
On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, expressed gratitude for the Police’s and the Navy’s enduring cooperation.

When it comes to protecting our waterways, the Nigerian Navy has always been a reliable partner. He boasted that the Navy and the Police Department’s partnership was still producing fruitful outcomes in the battle against crime.

All of the speakers were in agreement that the Nigerian Navy deserves congratulations on its 70th anniversary and that the Service will continue to play an important role in the country’s progress and safety.

After weeks of events planned by NNS Delta to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, the Officers’ Ceremonial Dinner was the last event of the celebration.
