On Saturday, Bashir Ahmad, a former media advisor to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, stated that previous President Goodluck Jonathan is not solely responsible for the actions of Boko Haram during his tenure.
Ahmad emphasised that the government and community must work together to secure Nigeria.
A former presidential assistant wrote on X that everyone from community leaders to religious figures and traditional institutions must do their part to keep Nigeria safe.
His reasoning was that he has always held the belief that protecting our communities is a shared obligation between the government and its citizens, therefore even during the Boko Haram insurgency he did not hold President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration solely responsible.
Everyone must do their part and devote themselves to the cause of security if it is to be achieved.
“Communities, traditional institutions, religious leaders, and individuals all have vital roles to play,” the author writes, “but governments provide leadership and resources.”
Refusing to provide criminals sanctuary and providing genuine intelligence to security services are two of Ahmad’s main demands of Nigerians.
We must not give criminals safe havens and instead back our security agencies with reliable information.
Additionally, he emphasised that the restoration of permanent peace and the assurance of a safer future for our communities and nation can only be achieved through a collective effort and personal accountability
